Hall Pass is a roommate-matching app for college students. This page explains exactly what we collect, why we need it, who else touches it, and how to get rid of it. We've tried to write it in plain English rather than legal filler.

The short version. We collect what you type into your profile and what you do in the app. We don't sell it, we don't run ads, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app at any time.

What we collect

Account information

Your profile

All of this is information you choose to enter, and all of it is visible to other verified students at your university:

What you do in the app

What we don't collect

Why we collect it

WhatWhy we need it
.edu emailTo confirm you're a real student and put you on the right campus
Profile and living preferencesTo calculate compatibility and show you to potential roommates
Passes and vibesTo avoid showing you the same person twice, and to detect a mutual match
MessagesTo deliver them to your match
Reports and blocksTo keep people safe and act on abuse

Who else sees it

Other students

Your profile is visible to other verified students at your own university only. It is not public, not indexed by search engines, and not visible to students at other schools. People you block can't see you.

Passes and vibes are private. Nobody is told that you passed on them, and a vibe only becomes visible to the other person once it's mutual.

Companies that run our infrastructure

These companies process data on our behalf. They are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.

Nobody else

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We would disclose information if legally required to — for example, a valid court order — or where we believe it's necessary to prevent serious harm.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we remove your profile, your photos, your passes and vibes, your matches, and your messages. Deletion is permanent and we can't undo it.

If someone has reported you, we may keep a record of that report after your account is gone. Otherwise abuse reports could be erased by deleting and recreating an account, which would make the safety features meaningless.

Your choices

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights — for example under the California Consumer Privacy Act or the GDPR. Email us and we'll honor them regardless of where you're based.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access to your data is enforced at the database level, so the rules about who can see what are applied by the database itself rather than only by the app. No system is perfect, but we don't store passwords ourselves and we don't collect payment details at all.

Age requirement

Hall Pass is for college students aged 16 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe someone younger has created an account, email us and we'll remove it.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that meaningfully affects you, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
